But when a garage door starts to act up, you\u2019ll know it almost instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a piece of moving mechanical infrastructure in your home, your garage door takes quite a beating in its day-to-day operation. And with that beating comes a host of potential things gone wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this blog post, we\u2019ll outline some of the most common garage door problems we see at Hilton Head Garage Doors. It\u2019s our hope that with the right insights, you\u2019ll know <em>exactly<\/em> what\u2019s going on with your garage door and how best to remedy it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Garage Door Track Alignment Problems<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The lift track is the part of the door that helps it move from a closed to an open position and back again. If you look at the inside of your garage door, your door likely has two tracks (one on either side of the door) sloping up on a gentle curve that begins perpendicular to the ground and ends along your garage ceiling parallel with the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To operate, garage doors often use rollers, which are essentially wheels that thread along the track as the door is pulled open by your opener. And as a high-friction, high-use piece of metal, any issue in track alignment can cause garage door opener problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When inspecting garage doors that don\u2019t open or close properly, we commonly look for track alignment issues. While not the simplest fix to ensure symmetrical and friction-free operation, a bit of elbow grease and metal reworking is often all it takes to get a door gliding normally again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Garage Door Problems Closing or Opening<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To open, your garage door opener literally pulls the door along its track using a system of cables, pulleys, and springs. And any of these high-tension components is liable to break after repeated usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your door has problems closing or opening, you might have a spring or cable that needs to be replaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Garage Door Safety Sensor Not Working<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The safety sensor on your garage door is a pair of laser sensors installed at either side of the door\u2019s opening. They work together to create an invisible beam that tells the door whether or not an opening or closing can be done safely. If the beam is broken, the garage door opener is intentionally not working until the obstruction clears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the beam requires an unbroken line of sight from one end of your garage door to the other, any issue with blockages, alignment issues, or poor installation can lead to garage door problems with normal operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On repair calls for garage door safety sensors not working, we typically will inspect each safety sensor to ensure they are powered, are able to generate and capture their laser beam, and are still communicating with your opener. As you might imagine, this is a common but subtle garage door problem for homeowners whose garage doors seem to be otherwise operational and damage-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Garage Door Opener Not Working Quietly Enough<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Garage doors require a lot of mechanical moving parts to operate. And each of these requires a careful system of alignment and lubrication to operate as expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In cases of noisy operation, whether squealing or the subtle sound of overwork, our team often looks for blockages, spots where parts may be colliding during operation, or lessening lubrication. Sometimes a quick hit of lubricant is all it takes. Other times, disassembly and reassembly allow the parts to contact as intended and for the opener to operate without disturbing those around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Door Panel Dents<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While unfortunately not as simple as some of the other items on our list, this common issue is one that we see on countless garage doors. Whether from an impact with a vehicle or, say, a basketball or from less common issues such as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandpacket.com\/news\/weather-news\/article314965843.html\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandpacket.com\/news\/weather-news\/article314965843.html\">hail<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandpacket.com\/news\/weather-news\/article314965843.html\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandpacket.com\/news\/weather-news\/article314965843.html\">damage<\/a>, a dented garage door can not only be an eyesore but can also impact its functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We start by assessing a garage door\u2019s material. In many cases, metal garage doors can simply be popped back into place (though panels made from wood, glass, or manmade materials often need to be outright replaced).
